They impressed everyone right out of the box. But then what happened?

Every once in a while, an actor or actress will come on the scene with impact, impressing everyone with their debut performance. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes a performer will burst out of the gate and show a lot of potential to be one of the great ones. But it doesn't always work out that way. Sometimes a great freshmen performance fails to lead to a good follow up, and the person who made the impressive debut starts to fade from the public consciousness. It may be due to forces beyond the performers control or it may be by choice. Still, it’s always sad when such potential is not used.

Here are a half-dozen actors who started with a bang and quickly faded with a whimper.

Heather Donahue (The Blair Witch project-1999) She came on the scene in a big way, starring in the low-budget hit film that became such a sensation and started the ‘hand-held-camera’ style of film making (Used in Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield and others). She seemed poised to be the new Jamie Lee Curtis, the horror film “it girl”. She got a lot of offers to do other horror films but turned them down, in order to prevent type casting. Since then, she’s done a number of TV appearances, most notably in the Spielberg mini-series Taken (2002) on the Sy-Fy channel, as well as a few short-films and a handful of minor film roles. Surprisingly, she gave up acting in 2008 to grow medical marijuana on a California farm instead.

Ted Neely (Played Jesus in Jesus Christ: Superstar—1973) The movie was profitable and became a cult favorite, leading to similar religious-themed musical films like Godspell. Neely should have ridden on a wave of popularity from this. Instead, he faded out. He did a few TV appearances, in shows like Starsky and Hutch and the Man from Atlantis, but by the 1980s, he was no longer acting. He tried his hand at composing music for a time.

Jennifer Hudson—(Played Effie White in Dream Girls-2006) After not winning American Idol, she got the much coveted role of Effie in the big-screen adaptation of the play Dream Girls. She won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her powerful performance. It seemed like she was going to be able to segue this success into a major movie career. But that didn’t happen. Since then, she’s done an episode of “Sex and the City”, a direct-to-DVD film and some other very minor roles. Mostly, she now does TV commercials for Weight Watchers.

Haing S. Ngor (Played Dith Pran in The Killing Fields-1984) Ngor was the perfect choice to play the Cambodian assistant to NY Times Correspondent Sydney Schanberg in the Vietnam drama. Ngor himself had been a prisoner of the Khmer Regime in Vietnam, so he knew first-hand how horrible the situation was. He won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this film. He was the first non-professional actor since Harold Russell in 1946 (more on Russell later) to win an Oscar, and only the second Asian Actor to win one at that time. After that, he had several TV acting credits and a few more minor film roles. Perhaps his accent and the lack of well-written roles for Asians limited his chances to land more film work. He wrote a best-selling autobiography about his terrible experiences in Vietnam. Ngor was shot to death in 1996. The investigation into his death never turned up the culprit.

Harold Russell (Played Homer Parrish in the Best Years of our Lives-1946) Like Ngor, Russell was a man who experienced what he acted. He lost his hands in World War Two. When the film was being cast, director William Wyler really wanted an actual handicapped person to play the role of the disabled Parrish. When Russell auditioned, he blew everyone away and instantly got the part. He won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Sadly, there was little work after that for an actor with no hands, so he didn’t act again for almost 40 years. He did some TV appearances in Trapper John MD and China Beach in the 80s. Russell passed away in 2002.

Maria Falconetti (Starred as the eponymous Joan in The Passion of Joan of Arc-1928). Her magnificent acting in this film is generally regarded by film historians as the single best performance of the silent era. It was ranked # 26 on Premier Magazine’s ‘Best Film Performances of all Time' list. The noted film critic Pauline Kael has praised it as the single greatest performance ever in the history of film! (Sound or silent.) The French-born Falconetti was undoubtedly extraordinary in this film, displaying the angst of the doomed Joan. However, she didn’t enjoy the experience. She was a comedic stage actress and preferred to return to doing comedy on stage. The heavy drama of playing Joan was just no fun for her. Other than one prior short film (Le Clown), this was her one screen appearance. She returned to the stage immediately after and never followed up this incredible performance.

I wish I watched enough movies to do something like this, but this is an awesome concept. I'm on the fence about Jennifer Hudson mainly because she's still quite young. Until it's been ten years, I wouldn't consider her a one film wonder. I think she can do it again, given the right material.

I never saw Blair Witch Project mainly because I don't like horror flicks but I cracked up after I learned she grew pot for several years. Great hub topic and very well written!

Hi Alecia; I hope Jennifer Hudson can make a comeback, too, because she showed in "Dream Girls" that she had what it takes. As for Heather Donahue, I laughed too, when I heard she'd given up a movie career to become a pot farmer.

Thanks for stopping by my hub to comment,

Rob

Rob, a very interesting hub. Heather Donahue is certainly a strange one isn't she? She obviously decided to tread an alternative path - and she certainly seems happy about it.

Voted up, interesting etc.

Hi Jools; She does seem a bit odd. I used to work with a guy who was a stuggling actor, about 10 years ago, and he said he knew Heather Donahue. He said she was ambitious and eager and really wanted to make it big. Thats why I find it so strange that she jumped ship on the verge of stardom.

Thanks for stopping by, Jools.

I think Jennifer Hudson could still have a career in film... She's still very young and she's got a lot of talent. She was GREAT in Dreamgirls, and technically has already broken past the one-film status because she was also wonderful in The Secret Life of Bee's! With a voice like that, and her new Weight Watcher's body, I doubt she'll remain a "one-hit-wonder."

This was a great Hub!

Hi Laura; Hudson was great in "Dream Girls" and I had hoped to see her step out of these ensemble roles and into the limelight but she seems content right now to be a supporting cast member in low budget films or TV shows. I hope she takes the leap into leading roles because there aren't enough black leading ladies in the industry.

She looks great now with her slimmer figure and I think that should help her.

Thanks for stopping by,

Rob

Hi Colin; "The Passion of Joan of Arc" is a classic and Maria Falconetti's performance is rightfully regarded as one of the screens finest hours. I would have liked to see more from her but sadly that never happened.

Thanks for the comments and the link. Always good to hear from you.

I have seen Jesus Christ Superstar and The Best Years of our lives. I remember that Harold Russell died a few years ago and he was included in the SAG awards memorial segment. I admire TBYOOL and watch it at least once a year, but I LOVE Jesus Christ Superstar.

Of the ones I have not yet seen, I am interested in Dream Girls. I cannot see me watching The Killing Fields, as great a film as it is. I may watch the 1928 Joan of arc film eventually, but NOT The Blair Witch Project. I was never interested in it.

Hi Flora; I love"Jesus Christ Superstar", too. I have the soundtrack and listen to it all the time. Its too bad Neely didn't do more things afterword. As for harold Russell, his handicap kept him from having a career which is too bad because he was talented.

"Dream Girls" is a good movie and Jennifer Hudson is very good in it, as is Eddie Murphy. Some good music, too. "The Killing Fields" is a very intense but well-made film. Haing Ngor is excellent in it.

And if you like silent films, you should definitely see "the Passion of Joan of Arc", because its probably the finest acting performance of the silent era. Falconetti is amazing in it.

"The Blair Witch Project" is actually over-rated in my book.

Always good to hear from you, Flora,

Rob

Excellent one film wonder actors. I think Jennifer Hudson has a chance to break out of these hub....but that can not be said for the other ones. I think George Lazenby would be another for the list....he appeared in one James Bond movie(and some think it is the best Bond movie)...and then pretty much vanished. Voted up and interesting. Great idea for a hub.

Hi Bruce; Yes, I guess George Lazenby fits into this list, too. He's the forgotten Bond. He had a tough act to follow, coming after Connery.

We'll have to see what happens with Jennifer Hudson from here. She may yet make a comeback. (Unless she decides to quit acting and join Heather Donahue on the pot farm.)

Always a pleasure to hear from you,

Rob
